Ilmari Tapiovaara

Yrjö Ilmari Tapiovaara (7 September 1914 Tampere - 31 January 1999 Helsinki) was one of the most important Finnish designers and interior designers of the 20th century.
Tapiovaara was born into an artistically talented brotherhood: his brothers were the graphic artist and illustrator Tapio Tapiovaara and the film director Nyrki Tapiovaara. His parents were forester Kaarlo Tapiovaara (formerly Karl Johan Viktor Karlsson) and Aino Rainio (formerly Grönroos). Ilmari Tapiovaara's first wife from 1939 was interior architect Annikki Tapiovaara née Tapiovaara. Hyvärinen (1910-1972).
The chairs, tables and other objects designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara are still highly valued products, and there is a strong demand for original items, especially abroad. Some of the best-known chairs include Domus, Aslak, Kiki and Nana.
Tapiovaara's design thinking represented pure functionalism. He believed that the purpose and structural concept of a product should be understood at first glance. Tapiovaara compared the work of a designer to that of a surgeon: once you know your trade, you can practice it anywhere, and if the results are good, they work all over the world.
