Carin Bryggman

Bryggman studied at the School of Art and Design 1940-1944 (now Aalto University School of Art and Design). He began his career by working first in various architectural firms in Sweden and then with his father Erik Bryggman in Turku. In 1949 she also founded her own interior design practice in Turku, the first woman to do so in Finland.
Bryggman was the interior architect of Turku Castle for more than 40 years. Together with her father, she was responsible for the restoration of the castle and designed a large number of fixtures, fittings and lamps. His other major works include interior designs for the Sibelius Museum in Turku and the Åbo Akademi Business School in the 1960s.
Over the decades, Bryggman's commissions for various public spaces have included hotels, restaurants, cafés, pharmacies, shops, banks, offices and exhibitions. In addition to Turku Castle, historically significant interior design projects included the Turku Academy House and the Archbishop's residence. Bryggman also designed interiors and furniture for private spaces.
Bryggman was awarded the State Prize for the Arts in 1982, the Svenska Kulturfonden Prize in 1986, the Aurora Medal of the Association of Southwest Finland in 1987 and the City of Turku Art Prize in 1990. He was an honorary member of the Society of Interior Architects (SIO).
