Celebration of Finnish Design
Finns truly love their design and craft tradition. Since 2022 architecture and design have their own flag-flying day on February 3rd, the birthday of Alvar Aalto. Craft traditions are celebrated on the 23rd of October.
Let's go back in time a bit. 150 years ago, the newly established Boman's steam carpentry factory moved to the banks of the Aura River in Turku, where the Finnish furniture industry began. The furniture factory became the largest and most famous in the country, employing around 500 people at its peak. Alvar Aalto moved to Turku at the turn of 1926-1927 and the rest is history.
Galleria Minerva is located at the same address where Boman's furniture store used to be, next door to its carpentry factories. The area is also known for the old shipyard that operated from the 18th century until the 1970s, the presence of which also influenced the development of Finnish furniture art in the first half of the 20th century.
To celebrate the Finnish craft tradition and the success story of Finnish design, we are delighted to share their brightest moments with you. Our online sales exhibition offers the opportunity to acquire works shaped by their creators along the way, allowing their journey to continue for generations to come.
